How to Choose the Right California Construction Lawyer

There are some important general things you should look for when choosing a California construction lawyer.  How well does the lawyer listen to you?  Does the lawyer answer your questions directly, even if the answer is, “I don’t know”?  Does the lawyer frame your issues in terms you can understand?  Do you feel comfortable being open and honest with the lawyer?  Do you get the sense that the lawyer wants you to be in the loop and understand what’s going on?  In short, how comfortable do you feel in being able to communicate with your lawyer back and forth?  Good communication, both ways, is the foundation of a successful relationship with your lawyer.

As for choosing the right California construction lawyer, you should obviously look for an attorney with experience in construction law who practices in California.  But beyond those basics you should look for a California construction lawyer with a broad understanding of the risks and challenges contractors, subcontractors, and material suppliers face every day.  Does the lawyer value your time as much as his or her own?  Does the lawyer make the effort to understand your legal issues within the context of your work projects and construction business as a whole?  Will the lawyer visit your jobsite if need be?  These are all indications of how well the lawyer will be able to manage the unique aspects of your particular matter within the parameters of California construction law.

The bottom line is that when it comes time to choose a California Construction Lawyer, you should look for someone with good communication skills, experience in construction related matters, whom you feel comfortable with, and who works to protect not only your legal rights, but also your resources (both time and money).  When you find that California construction lawyer, hire them!
